The Triassic on the map
The Triassic is when the first dinosaurs appear. Most of the land was joined into a single huge continent, and the early dinosaurs lived alongside many other reptiles. Triassic rocks give fewer dinosaur finds than the later periods, so each one matters.
The Paleobiology Database records 588 dinosaur finds that sit wholly in the Triassic, from 87 genera. That is 3% of all the finds on the map. A further set of finds has an age range that spans two periods, so it is not counted here; the map shows them in grey.
The most recorded Triassic genera are Plateosaurus (35), Coelophysis (24) and Herrerasaurus (11). The countries with the most Triassic finds are United States (176), Germany (82) and South Africa (65). The age slider lets you compare this period with the others.
